Hugoton--Rachel Kurt

Published 5/26/2011 in Youth In Excellence

Though she has attended Hugoton schools for nearly all her life, Rachel Kurt has seen more than just the plains of southwest Kansas.

Kurt, a graduating senior at Hugoton High School, has seen the landscape of the African country of Zambia during a mission trip.

That willingness to help others will serve her well in her planned occupational endeavors. The 4.0-student will be attending Oklahoma Christian University in Oklahoma City, and plans to major in biology.

"I want to continue my education and become either a doctor or a physician's assistant," Kurt wrote in a questionnaire provided to The Telegram. "I want to live and work in the United States but volunteer as a medical missionary, wherever I am needed."

Kurt was named valedictorian and holds several academic honors, including: Kansas Governor's Scholar, Kansas Honor Scholar, highest honor roll each semester, Topeka Capital-Journal All Academic team honorable mention and Kansas Regent's Scholar.

Kurt not only has been busy hitting the books, but she's played an active role in several organizations, including Girls' State, student council, class officer, National Honor Society, cheerleader for football, basketball and wrestling, band, choir and her church's youth group.

While she stays busy with her school work and other activities, the graduating senior makes time for a handful of hobbies.

"I enjoy playing the violin because it challenges me. I enjoy dancing because it keeps me in shape and my friends are in class with me," she said. "I enjoy reading because it lets me discover other worlds! I enjoy traveling for the same reason!"

As she readies herself for more explorations in education, Kurt has some advice for her fellow graduates.

"Plan for the future, but embrace the present. None of us are guaranteed a tomorrow, so make every day count," she said.

And for those still in the halls of Hugoton High School: "The only way to achieve anything meaningful in life is to work hard," she said.
