Holcomb--Nolan Gaede

Published 5/26/2011 in Youth In Excellence

Throughout high school, Nolan Gaede was heavily involved in both sports and academics.

The Holcomb High School graduate, was also named valedictorian and spoke at graduation May 14.

Gaede told fellow seniors not to stress about what the future may or may not bring, but to focus on the celebration of graduation.

Both on the court or field, and in the classroom, Gaede wants to be remembered for his successes at both — as an athlete and as a student.

He finished high school with a 4.0 grade-point average, was on the honor roll eight semesters, was named a Kansas Governor's Scholar, Kansas Honor's Scholar, and earned Academic All-League honors along with Academic All-State honors for cross Country and basketball.

In high school, he was involved in cross country, basketball, baseball, Kansas Association for Youth Club, Partners in Community Service, National Honor Society and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

In the classroom, math was his favorite subject.

"Math classes were my favorite because it came easy to me, and the teachers were great. Least favorite were English classes because you can't procrastinate on the essays," he wrote in a questionnaire provided to The Telegram.

In his spare time, Gaede liked to play basketball with his friends.

His fondest memory of high school was being a runner on the back-to-back state cross country championship teams in 2008 and 2009.

Gaede has advice for incoming freshmen about suriving high school.

"Whatever you do, do it to the best of your abilities," he said.

As for his fellow graduates, Gaede has a message for them as they embark on the next phase of their lives.

"Everyone has the power to impact the lives of others and be the positive change that society needs," he said.

Gaede plans to attend Kansas State University to study engineering.
