Whether through art, music or her participation in 4-H, Cecilia Ramsey knows the importance of self expression. That creative side has the Garden City High School graduate looking at attending Bethany College, where she plans to major in art therapy.
"I am majoring in this because I love to create, and I think that creating and expressing oneself is essential to be a balanced, healthy person," she wrote in a questionnaire provided to The Telegram.
Staying with the theme of individuality, Ramsey encourages those just embarking on their high school careers to stay true to themselves.
"Be yourself. Do your own thing," Ramsey wrote when asked what her advice to incoming GCHS freshman would be. "High school is about figuring out what you would like to do and be when you get into college. Don't follow the crowd. Make high school for your own benefit and not for others."
Ramsey participated and excelled in choir and orchestra at GCHS, being named outstanding choir member three times, and also played tennis. She was a member and officer in Beacon Boosters 4-H Club, where she was a champion goat showman and excelled in fashion design.
Ramsey, who has attended Garden City schools since kindergarten, didn't let activities detract from her academic performance as she graduated with a 4.0 grade-point average and was a Duke Talent Search member.
She was most fond of the classes that brought out her creative side: art, sculpture, painting and drawing classes, as well as choir.
One of her favorite hobbies is 4-H.
"I am in 4-H, so I raise animals (goats) and sew," wrote Ramsey, who has served as the vice president and president of Beacon Boosters 4-H Club. "I enjoy 4-H because of the opportunities it provides and experiences I have had."
Ramsey said her fondest memory from high school is "The first time I got a one at state on a solo performance," referring to the state vocal music competition.
Ramsey knows how she would like to be remembered by her classmates.
"As a good person who was fun to be around and good at what I did here in high school," she wrote.
