Deerfield--Kaitlin Morgan

Published 5/26/2011 in Youth In Excellence

Kaitlin Morgan's most memorable Deerfield High School moment came helping others.

"A fellow senior and I organized a cancer awareness night and fundraiser for cancer research during basketball season," she wrote in a questionnaire provided to The Telegram. "Thanks to the help of our art teacher and local sponsors, we were able to sell T-shirts and raise nearly $2,000 for cancer research."

The new graduate finished with a grade-point average of 4.0, first in the Deerfield Class of 2011.

She is a Kansas Honors Scholar, a Governor's Scholar, and a member of the National Honor Society. Her high school activities included FFA, FCCLA, cross country, basketball, scholar's bowl, all-school play, student council, 4-H and the Alpha Omega Youth Group.

Morgan's schooling began in kindergarten at Deerfield. She later attended Sunflower Elementary School in Lenexa, but eventually transferred back to Deerfield schools.

Her favorite high school class was art.

"It allowed me to be creative and express myself," she wrote.

She was not all that fond of mathematics, although she aced it.

"I have never been really good at math," Morgan said. "Numbers just aren't my thing."

Her down time interests are eclectic.

"I spend my spare time reading, taking pictures, spending times with friends and family, and watching sports, NCIS, and chick flicks," she wrote. "I enjoy these things because they allow me to relax and have fun."

Her advice to those just entering high school: "Get involved and take chances. You never know if you will like something or be good at it if you never try."

Morgan told her fellow graduates: "Follow your dreams."

She plans to attend Kansas State University with a dual major — animal sciences plus agriculture communications and journalism.

She wants her classmates to remember her "as a very determined and optimistic person who always had a smile on her face."
