Deerfield--Michelle Hernandez

Published 5/26/2011 in Youth In Excellence

Michelle Hernandez loves history.

"It is interesting learning about all the things people have done in the past and all of the hardships people have faced," the salutatorian of her senior class, who started school at Deerfield when she was 3, wrote in a questionnaire provided to The Telegram.

"I am one of the few people in my class that stayed in Deerfield all throughout elementary school, middle school and high school," she wrote.

And she has earned many academic honors along the way: The KU Honor Scholars award for example; National Honor Society, Odyssey of the Mind.

Hernandez also has taken part in basketball and volleyball. She was class president, a member of the band and part of the all-school play. Her least favorite class was "probably general science because I didn't find it interesting at all."

Hernandez spends time "with my friends and family, listening to music, playing sports or watching them on TV, and sleeping."

"I enjoy these hobbies because they help me relax," she wrote.

All of her high school memories are memorable, Hernandez said, "whether good or bad because they just helped shape me into the person/student that I am. If I had to choose one (favorite memory) it would probably be my senior year of basketball because my teammates and I played well together and we really bonded as a team."

Her advice to incoming high school freshmen: "Do your work and turn it in on time because any assignment is important even if it is a small one. They all add up. And don't procrastinate, it is just BAD!"

And for her fellow graduates: "Set goals for yourself, and no matter how hard or difficult the work may seem, do not give up. Keep on going."

She will attend Garden City Community College in pre-radiology and continue into pre-med.

"My goal is to get through my four years of college and get into medical school." Hernandez said. "My overall goal is to become a radiologist and help as many people as I can."

She wants her classmates to remember her "as a good and helpful person."
