When tournament organizers
for the 34th annual Southwest
Kansas Pro-Am decided to return
to its original three-day format for
the major event, it changed how
ancillary events would be sched-
uled.
Thus, the Southwest Kansas
Ladies Pro-Am and the Lewis
Motors Chevy Shootout, both
regular events for Pro-Am week,
will be held prior to the Friday-
Saturday-Sunday portion of the
Pro-Am.
The Ladies Pro-Am, now in its
sixth year, is seeking to complete
a field of 18 teams of three ama-
teur players to be paired with one
of the participating professionals
from the Adams Golf Pro Tour
Series.
This year, the Ladies Pro-Am
will tee off at 9 a.m. on Wednesday
at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course. A
luncheon and awards ceremony
will follow for all contestants and
the professionals will play for a
small purse while the amateurs
will compete for gift certificates
which are redeemable at either
Buffalo Dunes Golf Course or The
Golf Club at Southwind.
Last year, Michael Arnaud was
the low professional with a round
of 69 at Buffalo Dunes while
the amateur team of Jill Durst,
Michel Knoll and Tracy Johnson
posted a 65 to claim the title.
“We continue to see growth
with the ladies pro-am and are
looking forward to another
good turnout for the event this
year,” said Beth Koksal, Pro-Am
Coordinator. “Each year, everyone
has enjoyed competing and play-
ing with the professionals and the
pros have enjoyed being part of
the event.”
Thirteen teams and profession-
als participated in the 2012 event.
The Lewis Motors Chevy
Shootout had been conducted on
the Sunday morning after the Pro-
Am’s final round on Saturday in
each of the previous three sea-
sons. Now with the return to the
original format, the Shootout will
be played on Thursday at The
Golf Club at Southwind, with a
scheduled 8 a.m. shotgun start.
The field traditionally has been
full with 18 teams where three
amateurs are paired with one of
the competing professionals. Last
year’s event was sponsored by
Lewis Chevrolet.
Justin Kaplan of Houston was
the winning pro with a score of
4-under-par 67. The amateur team
of Darnel Wick, Dan Wick and
Jon Risley posted a score of 118 to
win that competition.
The entry fee for each tour-
nament is $100 per person and
participants’ cost covers golf cart,
greens fee, a golf shirt for the
women’s event, lunch and course
beverages. Gift certificates for
winners are redeemable at the pro
shop of both golf courses.
Proceeds above normal tour-
nament expenses are part of the
contribution to the Newborn
Intensive Care Unit at St.
Catherine Hospital.
The Ladies Pro-Am was the
brainchild of current tourna-
ment coordinator Beth Koksal,
who is completing her sixth and
final year before handing over
the duties to her successor, Kelley
Reeve.
The Ladies Pro-Am has seen
entries grow each year and a full
field would include 18 teams with
the Adams Tour group providing
the pros to compete in the event.
