USD 457 opens up new Garden City High School, in addition to other facility changes that resulted at Horace Good Middle School, Abe Hubert Elementary School and Garfield Early Childhood Center.

USD 457 implements 1-to-1 iPad initiative, putting an iPad in the hands of every student and teacher at Garden City High School.

GC Windsor Developers continue to try to move forward with plans for the Windsor Hotel, including a failed proposal in January 2012 to convert the historic building into a combination senior apartments/office space/retail/restaurant space. A revised proposal still pending calls a combination of shops, a restaurant and apartments.

Finney County Economic Development Corp. asks the Finney County Convention and Visitors Bureau to give a portion of the local bed tax revenue to the FCEDC to be used for economic development. The CVB went through its own transformation, changing its name from Convention and Tourism Bureau and becoming an independent entity in 2012.

Beef Products Inc. closes three plants, including its plant in Finney County, which employed more than 230 people. BPI closed the plants because of the controversy surrounding its meat product that critics, including ABC News, have dubbed "pink slime." BPI sued ABC News for defamation.

City of Garden City gives go-ahead for new retail development on east side of town. Construction of the project's largest retailer, Menards, began in 2012, but the overall project is estimated at $67.2 million, and when complete, will include an estimated 400,000 square feet of retail space.

A pair of fires — one in Finney County and the other in Scott City — take the lives of seven people, including two women and five children. In both cases, the rental units did not have smoke detectors as required by state law. In both cases, family members filed wrongful death lawsuits, and in the case of the Finney County fire, it prompted local officials to take a closer look at how they conduct rental inspections.

Flights from Garden City Regional Airport to Dallas start up in April, and the number of passengers flying out of the airport rise as a result. By year's end, the airport's enplanement figures had reached new heights.

Garden City Commissioner John Doll wins Kansas House Republican primary, filling the seat vacated by State Rep. Reynaldo Mesa.

Plans to build a wind farm that would include 100 to 200 turbines in parts of Grant and Haskell counties, and would include transmission lines running through Finney County, moved forward.

Susan Richmeier wins Finney County Attorney Republican Primary over Assistant County Attorney Brian Sherwood, then has to face Sherwood and his write-in campaign again in the November general election, where she defeats him for a second time.

Seaboard Foods' Ladder Creek hog farm in Greeley County gets green light in January 2012, begins operation in October and along the way faces scrutiny after the KDHE received a complaint that the facility wasn't taking the required steps to reduce the odor produced by its operation.

Lee Richardson Zoo broke ground in August on the much anticipated Cat Canyon project, which will create a more natural and roomier habitat for the jaguars, pumas and bobcats, with a viewing building and windows for each species of cat.

New Scott County Hospital opens its doors in April. Scott County voters approved the $24 million bond for the hospital in September 2009. Groundbreaking for the hospital took place in August 2010.

Joaquin De Anda sentenced to "Hard 50" life in prison for December 2008 murder of 16-year-old Julia Quintana.

Finney County Attorney John Wheeler decides not to file charges in the September 2011 shooting death of Garden City High School standout wrestler Braxston Medina.

St. Catherine Hospital announced in November its plans to join Colorado-based Centura Health, along with St. Rose Ambulatory and Surgery Center in Great Bend.
