Brett Marshall: Lakin's Lohman loves AD life

Published 10/14/2008 in None : Columns

I was taking a look at my upcoming work schedule Monday morning. It's not an uncommon thing for me to review the week's events to make sure we're getting as many sports covered as possible.

As I studied the schedule, I began to think that 'wow, this really is kind of a crazy schedule.' But then, I really knew that anyway, didn't I?

Later, as I drove the 23 miles to Lakin for the Class 3-2-1A regional girls golf tournament, I realized I had just been there not too long ago. And more than once.

The reality was that in a span of nine days, I had been in Lakin to cover a girls invitational golf tournament, a cross country meet, and now the regional girls golf. And there's more to come. Thursday, it's the Hi-Plains League cross country meet.

Greeting me was Lakin High School Athletic Director Kim Lohman. Many of you, especially in Lakin, know her. She's been in the Lakin school district for 24 years, the last seven as athletic director.

As I sat down to talk to her, I realized that someone else may have just as crazy, or perhaps more so, a schedule than I do. After listening, I'll take my schedule any day of the week after Lohman checked off a rather lengthy list of her "normal" week.

Last Friday, at 10 a.m. she began a six-hour drive to Beloit for the Broncs' football game. It was a six-hour return trip, arriving home at 2:30 a.m. Just a few hours later, at 8 a.m., she was at the golf course making sure the cross country meet had everything in the right place. She was the official timer of the event as well. With rain falling later, she helped pick up all the equipment. Done at 1:30 p.m.

Monday, she was at the golf course at about 8 a.m. Her computer expertise aided the scoring of the tournament. At 5 p.m. it was off to a junior varsity football game before going to the Lakin School Board meeting (she's the school board treasure).

Tonight, she's in Sublette attending a volleyball meet (no extra work involved). Wednesday night, it's babysitting her granddaughter (the best night of the week, she says). Thursday, it will be the HPL cross country meet and two middle school events. She is also the middle school AD. Friday, it's a home football game.

Four classes (three computer, one accounting) take up the first half of her weekdays. She has two phone lines into her room, a cell phone and an intercom.

Lohman is the secretary-treasurer for the Hi-Plains League, and she's the secretary for the Broncbackers (booster club for high school activities). She's asked if the word 'no' appears in her dictionary and she readily admits it does not. How do you say no to the kids? She doesn't know. She relaxes when she can sit back and watch kids just be kids.

She multi-tasks with the best. Aside from football and basketball officials for varsity games, Lohman has to schedule every official for every other junior varsity and varsity sport.

Lohman is quick to credit her seasoned coaching staff for making her job easier. She praises the building and grounds supervisor for taking many worries off her shoulders.

There you have it. A week in the life of a highly-organized athletic director. I am glad that Kim Lohman is doing that job and doing it well. She, along with others at area schools, make my life much easier.
