'Horns stampede Sublette 39-0

HOLCOMB -- The first two times Holcomb touched the football Friday, it resulted in fumbles that were recovered by the Sublette Larks.

Both came inside the Longhorn 30 and both times Sublette failed to capitalize on the miscues.

It was then that Holcomb head coach Jerry Johnson had a feeling that things might turn out well for his senior-laden team. It was then that veteran Sublette coach Steve Simpson realized it might be an uphill battle all night. And both were right.

Holcomb, which had dominated Hoisington in its season opener a week ago (a 25-0 win) came up big defensively all night against the Larks, putting a 39-0 loss on their Hi-Plains League foe, and has yet to give up any points.

"I couldn't ask our defense to play any better than they have the first two weeks," Johnson said. "We shot ourselves in the foot early but the defense stepped up to meet the challenge. I am so proud of the way the kids played tonight."

After those early Longhorn turnovers, Holcomb settled into a rhythm on offense. Running the ball with a variety of backs, then hitting passes to keep drives alive.

It would be two possessions later that Sublette's first turnover began a long night for the Larks' offense. On third and five from the Sublette 39, quarterback Brett Holloway had the ball ripped loose and Holcomb's Nathan Gonzales picked it up and raced 37 yards untouched for the first score of the game with 3:42 left in the first quarter. Holcomb's point after pass was intercepted.

"You've gotta take advantage of the opportunities when you're given them," Simpson said. "We didn't and they did. We're still young and that inexperience showed in many ways tonight. I think there for awhile, our kids felt sorry for themselves but they did get some pride back later, but it was a little late."

That's the way the first quarter ended. Although the score was close, it would soon turn into a Longhorn stampede.

With possession at the end of the first quarter, Holcomb embarked on a 10-play, 68-yard drive consuming four minutes, 41 seconds. It was capped off by Jarrett Stanton's 3-yard run up the middle where he was untouched into the end zone. Another missed extra point left Holcomb up 12-0 at the 8:38 mark of the second quarter.

"Our goal tonight was to grind it out on offense so we didn't go up top as much as we might have," said Johnson.

After holding Sublette on its next possession, Holcomb went back to work, moving 57 yards in just 1:42. The touchdown came on Tyler Terry's 4-yard run off right tackle.

Sublette took the kickoff and set up offense on its 31 only to have Holloway's underthrown pass intercepted by Stanton who raced down the right sideline untouched for another Longhorn score. A missed PAT kick kept the margin to 25-0 and only 14 seconds had elapsed on the clock.

"(Holcomb) didn't do anything that we didn't expect, but they were as good as I thought and we weren't as good as I thought," Simpson said. "We were out of position just as much tonight as we were in position last week (a 28-0 victory over Southwestern Heights). You've got to be mentally and physically tough and there were times where we were physically tough tonight but not mentally."

If Sublette had any faint hopes of cutting into its halftime deficit, Holcomb put that to rest on the opening drive of the third quarter. The Longhorns ran their way through the Larks, and hit an occasional medium-length pass, marching 65 yards in 10 plays, and upping their lead to 32-0 at the 7:52 mark.

"We talked at halftime about coming out with an attitude to start the third quarter and I think the drive reflected that," Johnson said.

Holcomb closed out the scoring with 2:37 remaining in the third stanza when Wilcox found Terry on a 25-yard deep out pass play.

The Longhorns (2-0) will host Kinsley next week while Sublette (1-1) meets Hi-Plains League Cimarron at home.
