Sublette will host opening tourney

Area high school girls golf teams will get to use the first golf tournament of the season as a good measuring stick, with five high school girls golf teams from the Hi-Plains League — Holcomb, Hugoton, Lakin, Sublette and Syracuse —  competing at the Cimarron Valley Golf Club on Thursday at Satanta.
“It’s going to be no easier than the last meet of the year (regionals),” Holcomb girls golf coach Scott Stegman said. “There will be all the teams we face all year, teams we’ll have to face at regionals, which makes for a good tournament. You want to compete against the best and in southwest Kansas, you have teams with top quality golfers and they all will  again this year.”
Scott City will also be sending a team to the tournament hosted by Sublette.
Stegman’s team finished second at last year’s tournament and claimed the crown the year before. He’ll have two returning golfers who finished in the top-10 at the event a year ago.
“Stephanie Asmus and Amanda Owens were 8th and 9th last year, so it would be nice to see them in top-five this year — and it’s possible,” Stegman said. “We also have a couple sophomores who could surprise some people and then will also have Amber Unruh, who transferred from Garden City. So we have high hopes and this first tournament will give us the opportunity to see where everyone stands and we’ll just go from there.”
Asmus, Owens and Unruh along with returner Rachel Careathers, are all seniors. Amy Stegman is Holcomb’s top returning sophomore. They also have a junior transfer from Scott City, Alyssa Oller.
