It was one of those games where one big play would be the deciding factor. Unfortunately, for the Garden City High School boys soccer team it was Liberal that got the big play in a 1-0 loss on Tuesday at Memorial Stadium.
"One pass made the difference," GCHS coach Joaquin Padilla said. "We were too high up and the person who got the ball was pretty fast. It was one mistake. And I knew it was whoever made the first goal would probably be the winner of the game."
It was just over three minutes into the second half when Liberal's Jose Chavira slipped past the Buffs defense before sending a pass across the box to Cesar Jurado, who put it in for the game's lone goal.
"The kids played well," Padilla said. "They feel let down that they lost, but they played well and played hard. Again, it just comes down to that pass and that mistake."
There wasn't much Garden City's goalkeeper Cesar Flores could do on the play as his defense was unable to stay with Liberal's speedy attackers, leaving Flores in a vulnerable position.
Flores gave the Buffaloes a fighting chance despite constant offensive pressure from the Redskins. The junior goalie collected four saves -- two in each half -- and made countless other plays to prevent Liberal from adding to its advantage.
"Cesar did a great job on some of those shots,"Padilla said. "We played as well as they did, they just got the break."
Garden City had plenty of opportunities on the attack, but couldn't quite crack the Liberal goalkeeper, which made eight saves as the Buffs totaled 10 shots in the game.
"We couldn't ask any more from our kids," Padilla said. "We just didn't have any luck today. We attacked them just like we normally do with Miguel (Ramirez) and Ricardo (Yeverino) and the other guys in the middle. We had some goods shot. We just didn't make any."
The best the Buffs can now finish in the WAC standings is second, which will ride on their final two league games starting Thursday at Great Bend, which Garden City defeated 8-1 at home Sept. 30.
"We will talk about this and how it's over," Padilla said. "We now need to think about if we want to play at home for regionals or if we want to play somewhere else. So the focus will be win the rest of the games and hopefully we'll have a good enough record that we can host."
