Lady Buffaloes golf geared for state

This is the moment that tests character. Starting at 8 a.m. on Monday at Alvamar Golf Course in Lawrence, the Garden City High School girls golf team will find out what type of character they have at the Kansas Class 6A state tournament.

"When you're talking about the state golf tournament in Kansas, it's a one day event," GCHS coach Lloyd Tiffany said. "Any time you get to state competition, some times you battle the nerves and handling the nerves and just being there you try to create it as something different when it really isn't. It's just a golf course and you're out there hitting with a basic golf swing."

Tiffany had anticipated taking the girls out to Alvamar Sunday afternoon, but both the golfers and their parents had another idea.

"Originally I thought we were going to go out Sunday morning, but a lot of the parents and a lot of the girls are wanting to go out Saturday," Tiffany said. "So we're leaving early Saturday morning and get out there. I know I have tee times set up for Sunday, but I think they also have tee times for like 1:30 (p.m.) on Saturday. So Saturday afternoon we'll get on there, as well."

With each member of the team making a first appearance at state, getting familiar with the course may be important.

Western Athletic Conference champ Mackenzie Thayer, however, has already seen what type of obstacles Alvamar can throw at a golfer. Thayer actually went out to Lawrence last weekend to get a round in on the golf course her father Sean Thayer played his college golf.

"Her dad played for KU, so because of that they have those connections," Tiffany said. "So they get back there occasionally. Of course, any time you play a course you become more comfortable with it in most cases."

Freshman Anna Robinson has also spent some time on the course, but it should be a new experience for junior Syd Sassaman and sophomore Taylor Morrow. Fortunately for them, they are playing some of their best golf of the season -- including Sassamn, who won the individual regional title at Southwind Country Club.

The excitement will surely be greatest for Lauren Deaver, the lone senior. Deaver will be making her first appearance at the state tournament in her last year at GCHS.
