DEERFIELD — The visiting South Gray Lady Rebels, holding just a three-point lead at halftime, cruised to an easy 56-33 win against Deerfield on Tuesday.

After taking a 12-4 first-quarter lead, South Gray struggled in the second, thanks partly to 15 fouls that sent the Lady Spartans to the foul line 19 times, where they converted 12.

But the Rebels came out of the break with a 20-2 run to take a 43-22 lead at the end of the third, holding Deerfield to just a pair of free throws.

The closest the Spartans got was 14 (46-30) early in the final period, as South Gray grabbed the win.

All 12 Rebels got in the scoring column, led by Emily Wright’s 10. Myranda Axtell and Raine Torres added eight each.

South Gray improved to 6-13, but the win is the first for the Rebels in their last nine games.

And it’s the first win after losing four-year starter Dusty Watkins (17 points per game) to injury.

“It was good for the girls to pick up a win. It’s a confidence boost going into substate,” South Gray coach Collin Mangus said. “If you look at our substate, it’s pretty wide open.”

Even with just six wins, Mangus said his girls are in the mix for the fourth seed, and this win can carry them into next week, when they will likely play Stanton County.     Deerfield had just three girls score. Mollie Calderon had 15, Hailey Novack 10 and Molly Morgan eight for the Lady Spartans (1-18).

South Gray is finished for the regular season, while Deerfield faces Rolla on Friday before substate next week, when they will travel to Coldwater.
