While Scott City's boys rolled to their second straight home victory on Friday night in the Clarion Inn Southwest Classic with a 76-27 runaway over Dumas, Texas, the Lady Beavers girls struggled in the first half before falling to the Lady Demons from Texas, 54-40, at the Scott City gymnasium.

Still working their way into basketball shape after winning the 3A state football championship 13 days earlier, the Beavers jumped out to a 13-4 lead before getting things rolling.

"After the first four minutes, I think we had more turnovers than points," said Scott City coach Glenn O'Neil. "Then, we were able to stretch it out in the second quarter and were able to play 10 players and get some people minutes to help preserve legs for tomorrow (Saturday)."

With six different players scoring in the second period, the Beavers went on a 22-7 run to take a 35-11 lead at halftime.

"I thought we were a little bit better on some things tonight than we were last night (85-74 win over Denver South)," O'Neil said. "We're just still not in condition and it's going to come along before we can really play the style we want."

Still, the Beavers then went on another extended run, outscoring the Demons 24-9 and 17-7 in the final two quarters for an easy triumph.

"We've got Anthony (Wilson) out with a tweaked ankle and we're searching for that third guard to come into the rotation, and tonight allowed us to look at some of those kids," O'Neil said. "They'll have a chance to play their way into the lineup and that will help our depth."

All 11 players who got into the game scored. Senior Drew Kite topped the effort with 18 points, while Trey O'Neil followed with 14 and Brett Meyer chipped in with 10, all of those in the fourth quarter. Brett O'Neil and Joey Meyer each tallied nine for the balanced effort. Jordan Hutcherson had eigh points for Dumas.

Girls

In the girls game, Dumas got off to a strong start against the Lady Beavers, using a 20-8 second-quarter outburst to take a 34-20 halftime lead, and it was good enough to hold up through the second half.

"We just turned the ball over quite a few times in that first half," said Scott City coach Lori Oestreicher. "We weren't executing our offense the way we should've, but those are things that we can work on once we get some more practice time in."

The Lady Beavers (0-2) trimmed the deficit to 39-29 after three quarters, and then made one final run at the Lady Demons, closing to within two before fading at the end.

"I think when we got to the two-minute mark, we just got tired there, and they hit some layups and forced us into some turnovers," Oestreicher said. "It's pretty tough with a new coach, new players, new system, because we haven't had time to go back and practice on those things that need fixing."

Oestreicher said the Lady Beavers did a better job of getting the ball inside to their two tall frontcourt players — Janessa Lowenthal and Bailey Nickel — who combined for 23 points. Lowenthal had 12 and Nickel 11 to pace Scott City.

Katie Campbell and Jolie Eudey led the Lady Demons with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

"I thought we had a good third quarter defensively and were able to get to the free throw line more in the second half," Oestreicher said. "The girls improved and will continue to get better."
