SCOTT CITY — The Lady Beavers opened the season with a 69-51 loss to Denver South on the opening night of the Southwest Clarion Classic.

With no game last week, Scott City was hoping to come out with a fresh start against a 1-1 team that had lost Tuesday evening.

Though dressing out just seven players, Denver South played pesky defense and caused 48 turnovers.

The Rebels scored 34 of their points following a turnover.

That, and a solid combination of inside-outside shooting led to the lopsided win.

Nashua Bile, who entered the game with 9 three-pointers in two games, hit six on her way to a game-high 24 points.

Naudia Sweets had 21 points, and Kendra Martin added 16, with 14 in the second half.

Scott City was down just 18-15 at the end of the first quarter, and, thanks to a 6-0 run to end the half, were down only 36-28.

But something happened during the intermission and the Beavers committed 14 turnovers in the third to find themselves down by 16 at the break.

The loss spoiled the Beavers coaching debut of Lori Oestreicher, who saw her team play two different halves.

"We came out a totally different team the second half. We were just slow on defense, turning the ball over way too much, not capitalizing on their turnovers. It just got out of control," she said. "We lost our heart to win."

Whether it was first-game jitters or not being in shape, Oestreicher felt the desire of the first half dissipated in the second half.

Denver South was in foul trouble in the first half, but Scott City stopped attacking the goal to force the Rebels to pick up more fouls the second half, she said. That was another missed opportunity.

"It would have been a different game if we had kept attacking the basket and getting those girls out of the game," she added.

Still, scoring 51 points in their first game was a good thing, Oestreicher said.

Janessa Lowenthal led the Beavers with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Kelly Wycoff, who sat much of the second half with foul trouble, had 14 points and seven boards.

Scott City hosts Dumas (Texas) tonight the Classic.
