Area wrestlers advance to regional finals

A dozen area wrestlers from Class 4A and 3-2-1A schools reached the championship match of their respective weight divisions at three different regional tournaments on Friday.

Class 4A Hugoton and Ulysses were at the Augusta regional while Scott City competed at the Norton 3-2-1A regional. Holcomb, Lakin, Cimarron, and Sublette all had wrestlers competing at the Garden Plain regional.

For Hugoton, Patrick Weaver advanced to the title match at 145 pounds while Lawson Fiss will battle for the top spot today at 152 pounds for the Eagles. Also earning a spot in the finals for Hugoton was 195-pounder Bradley Campbell. Ulysses' Armando Sandoval at 182 pounds and Otto Orosco at 220 pounds will contend for the title in their weight classes today.

At Norton, Scott City's Alex Kough reached the finals of the 126-pound division for the Beavers. He was the lone finalist for the defending state 3-2-1A team champions.

At Garden Plain, Holcomb's Keegan Amos advanced to the finals at 132 pounds. Lakin's Dalton Gonzales will take on Cimarron's Tanner Smith for the 160-pound title after both won a pair of matches on Friday.

Misael Banderas of Holcomb will be in the finals at 138 pounds while Sublette's Wyatt Brown advanced to his title match at 113 pounds. AJ Cooper of Cimarron also advanced, qualifying for the championship bout at 182 pounds.

Consolation bracket matches were to begin at 11 a.m. today with championship matches to be held at approximately 4 p.m.

The top four finishers in each weight division advance to respective state tournaments on Feb. 22-23. Class 4A will be at the Salina Bicentennial Center while Class 3-2-1A is at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays.
