Another award has come to Carlos Prieto, the first-year wrestling coach at Garden City High School, who guided the Buffs to the Class 6A state team championship in February.

Prieto was recently voted by his peers across Kansas as the 2013 Class 6A Wrestling Coach of the Year. The award is presented annually by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association.

At the state tournament in February, Prieto also was honored by the Kansas Wrestling Officials Association.

"It (the award) is a tribute to our coaching staff," Prieto said Wednesday. "This one means more to me because it comes from the coaches with whom we compete."

In his first season as the Buffs' head coach, Prieto guided the team to the Western Athletic Conference title, a regional championship and then captured the state title with a dominating team effort in which the Buffs had five finalists, including two individual state champions.

"This tells me that we're doing the right things in how we work with the young men in the program," Prieto said. "I think the state championship has brought so much pride back to Garden City — the school and the community. I knew wrestling was big when I got the job, but in all honesty I didn't know it was this big."

Of the five state finalists, the two champions — freshman Michael Prieto, the coach's son, and sophomore Tevin Briscoe — will return to anchor a deep and talented Buffs' team for the 2013-14 season. They will have seven state qualifiers, in all, back for next season.

Prieto will be honored at the organization's annual banquet on Nov. 2 at the Salina Ramada Hotel and Convention Center.
