Since her arrival at Garden City Community College as the new women's basketball coach in April, Alaura Sharp has been on the recruiting trail landing seven recruits for her first season.
Of the seven, five are from Kansas and four of them are from the southwest part of the state. From what she's seen of the four that are from Garden City, Moscow and Sublette, Sharp is impressed.
"I am really excited about them," she said. "They have come out and worked really hard. I think they've done a good job of buying into what I'm trying to do here and they all want to help us be better."
Since the start of summer conditioning, Sharp said her two recruits from Garden City, Marisela Rodriguez and Myranda Munoz, have both been in the gym five days a week. While Rodriguez, who was a first team All-Area selection by the Telegram, adds height (6-foot-3) to the squad, Munoz, gives the team a recruit with a year of college experience. A 2008 graduate of Garden City High School, Munoz played her freshman season at Bethel College in North Newton.
"Myranda is an excellent shooter when she gets her feet set," Sharp said. "She possesses a great work ethic that translates into effective leadership."
Rodriguez will give the Lady Broncbusters a big lift in the middle with her height, as Deirdre Mays is the only returner taller than 6-foot. Last season, Rodriguez helped lead GCHS to its first state tournament appearance in 21 years as she averged 13.5 points, 12.7 rebounds and 2.4 blocks a game to go along with her shooting 50 percent from the floor.
Munoz will have plenty of competition at the guard spot as Sharp also has brought in Destanee Bohl from Moscow and Aileen Gonzalez from Sublette. Gonzalez played point guard for the Lady Larks as she averaged almost 10 points a game.
"Aileen bring a great amount of energy to the floor," Sharp said. "She has the ability to play both guard positions, and she defends extremely well."
Bohl, who moved to Garden City this week, brings more of the shooting guard mentality to the team after averaging 15.9 points last season. She showed her versatility by averaging 5.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 3 steals a game. She shot 41 percent from 3-point range.
"Destanee is a player who plays extremely hard," Sharp said. "Her court vision makes her a very effective passer and she will be counted on to provide energy for us all season."
As Sharp and her staff hope to add at least three more signees to the 11-player roster, the first year head coach will take a small break from the recruiting trail this weekend. Sharp will be a team coach in the Junior College Top 120 Women's Basketball Showcase that starts in Tulsa, Okla., today. GCCC sophomore guard Cheree Freeman will participate in the showcase that will have around 400 college recruiters expected to attend. Coaches attending will range from NCAA Divsion I programs through NAIA.
