Scott City wins big, Eagles top SW Heights

At Goodland, the Scott City Beavers overcame a slow start by exploding for 22 points in the second quarter and another 14 in the third en route to a 51-15 victory over Goodland on Friday night in a Great West Activities Conference contest.

Goodland scored first on a 4-yard run by Garrett Taylor midway through the opening quarter before Brett O'Neil raced 28 yards with one minute to play in the first to tie the game at 7.The Beavers, who are 6-0 overall and have now won all three GWAC titles since the league was formed in 2010, also finished 5-0 in league play.

Brett O'Neil threw three touchdown passes in the second quarter, a 37-yarder to Drew Kite, a 23-yarder to Tyler Hess and a 5-yarder to younger brother Trey O'Neil. In the third quarter, the Beavers got an 81-yard TD pass from Brett O'Neil to Dalton Buehler and a 9-yard run by Brenner Wells. T.J. Price scored on a 7-yard run in the fourth quarter to complete Scott City's scoring and Goodland scored late in the fourth on a 3-yard run by Taylor.

Scott City amassed 470 yards of offense, 210 on the ground and 260 through the air as Brett O'Neil completed 15-of-20 passes for 257 yards. Wells and Buehler led a balanced Scott City running game with 65 and 58 yards, respectively.

The Beavers open Class 3A District play on Friday when they host Hoisington. With new districts realigned for 2012 and 2013, the Beavers are now competing with TMP-Marian, Russell and Hoisington. Scott City increased its regular-season winning streak to 34 games, dating back to the final game of the 2008 season. They last lost a regular season game to Norton in week 8.

Hugoton 37, SW Heights 19

At Kismet-Plains, the Hugoton Eagles claimed their second win of the season with a 37-19 non-league victory over the Southwestern Heights Mustangs.

The Eagles scored 14 points in the first quarter and added nine in the second to take early command, 23-0, at halftime.

Heights cut the deficit to 23-13 after three quarters with a touchdown run by Rogelio Martinez and a TD reception by Tucker Smith from Ben Johnsrud.

Hugoton put the game out of reach in the fourth with a pair of scores to offset one TD by the Mustangs.

The Eagles are now 2-4 overall and Heights is 1-5.
