HOLCOMB — The Holcomb girls basketball team took advantage of turnover-prone Wichita Trinity to cruise to a 74-29 win in the second night of the Clarion Inn Southwest Classic.

Holcomb hit 15 field goals in the first half while Trinity turned it over 18 times and converted just 3-of-23 from the floor, as the Longhorns built a commanding 47-8 lead at the break.

Inside-outside play established Holcomb's offensive dominance in the first half.

Katie Pfeifer's trio of treys and Taylor Deniston's seven points provided the outside offense, while Kylee Amos and Karissa Pena combined for 27 points to dominate the paint.

That was just for two quarters.

For the game, Deniston, coming off the bench, led Holcomb with 17 points, followed by Amos with 17, Pena with 13 and Pfeifer with 12.

Holcomb ran a press that flustered the Lady Knights early and often, and an offense that mixed it up with backdoor plays, screen cuts and one-on-one drives proved to be the right combination to keep the Lady Longhorns undefeated.

"Best game defensively we've played so far," Holcomb coach Kenton Tennal said. "We had the press working again, and defensive fundamentals are getting better. A pretty solid game."

Tennal said he's adding plays every night, which included cuts to the basket based on a play he "stole" from boys coach Chad Novack the night before.

"We've got a lot of plays in right now," he said, "but it's a good challenge with this group."

For the third straight game, Holcomb hit nine 3-pointers.

Holcomb moves to 3-0 for the season and will face Denver South (3-2) at 5 p.m., another team that likes to hit from behind the arc.

"I'm excited. We've known from day one that this was going to be our toughest game to start out the year," Tennal said.

Trinity falls to 0-3 and will travel to Scott City for a 5 p.m. game.
