HOLCOMB — Coming off a tournament win last week in Hillsboro, Holcomb kept its winning ways on track with a 52-33 win over Hugoton in Great West Activities Conference play.

The Longhorns picked up their 11th this season with a solid defensive second half, holding the Eagles to just 13 points on four field goals.

Holcomb threatened to run away early when they forced numerous Eagle turnovers or one-and-out possessions. But they were up just 11-7 at the first break, and they kept Hugoton in play when they gave up a number of inside shots.

Leading just 27-20 by halftime, the Longhorns got their offense on track in the third quarter, going 7-for-11 from the floor (3-for-4 on threes).

Holcomb was up 42-21 after starting the final period with a 15-1 run, as it cruised to the win.

Tyler LaSalle led the Longhorns with 13 points, the only Holcomb player in double figures. That was a case of balanced scoring in a total team effort, coach Chad Novack said.

"That's one thing I keep telling the kids; share the ball, and that makes us tough to guard," he said.

About the only aspects of the Longhorns' game he wasn't totally pleased with was rebounding (28-19) and turnovers (they had 14).

"We still have to do a better job taking care of the ball and limit those empty possessions," he said. "We did an okay job on the boards, but we could have been better. Credit Hugoton for blocking out on our offensive board opportunities."

After two league losses to Scott City and Ulysses, the Longhorns went 3-0 at the Hillsboro tournament, but it also might have taken a toll on his team's energy early, Novack said.

"We came out a little sluggish in the first half," he said. "We had a big tournament last week and maybe had a little let down. But the second half, we buckled down."

Hugoton got to the lane too much for his liking in the first half, Novack said, so the Longhorns mixed up defenses in the second half to keep the Eagles outside for the most part.

Jeison Rodriguez led the Eagles with 10 points, and Rene Rubio and Henry Vela followed with seven each.

Holcomb (11-2, 4-1) faces a challenge Tuesday when they travel nine miles to take on Garden City, another team that's hot of late.

"They're lengthy, athletic, run the floor well, and shoot well," Novack said. "We're going to have to bring our A game because they're going to be ready."
