For the second straight week, the Holcomb Longhorns got off to a slow start before finishing strong, this time with a 31-3 drubbing of Colby on the road.

The Longhorns trailed 3-0 after one quarter following a fumble inside their own 20, resulting in a 38-yard field goal by Treck Keck for the Eagles.

"I didn't know if we got off the bus," head coach Jerry Johnson said of his Longhorns' start. "But we kind of got things going in the second quarter and were able to finish off the game strong."

Johnson said the Eagles came out in a defensive formation that they had not seen all year and it took some time for his offense to make the adjustments.

"Once we got some of those things fixed, I thought our offense played much better," Johnson said. "Both the offensive and defensive lines played well, and we've only given up the three points in two games."

Tyler LaSalle once again had a big night for Holcomb, passing for 218 yards, rushing for 67 and taking part in all four touchdowns. He threw for three TD passes — 35 yards to Keegan Amos in the second quarter and then three to Tucker, one covering 59 yards in the second period and then two more in the third, one of 34 yards and another of 17 yards. Tucker added a 27-yard field goal in the third.

"I thought in the second half, the kids were really focused and were able to put the game away," Johnson said.

The Longhorns defense performed well again, limiting the Eagles' top rusher, Beau Brown, to a mere 29 yards rushing and for the game, held Colby to 153 total yards.

"The defense came up huge for us."

The win improves the Longhorns' season record to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the Great West Activities Conference. Colby falls to 2-3 and 1-3. Next up for the Longhorns will be a trip to Ulysses for a 7:30 p.m. game on Friday. Ulysses notched a 48-13 victory at Goodland and is 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the GWAC.
