Garden City lands two on boys All-State soccer team

The Garden City High School boy's soccer squad may have only advanced one round in this year's playoffs, but they earned a lot of respect from both the Western Athletic Conference and state coaches.

Their efforts were recognized with several players earning All-WAC honors and a pair of players being named to All-State teams.

Ricardo Yeverino, who was a first team All-WAC honoree, was named to the All-State first team, as well. His teammate Edgar Reyes landed on the All-State second team after earning a spot on the All-WAC honorable mention team.

"It's something that they have both worked for and something they deserve as far as what they showed in the games," Buffs coach Joaquin Padilla said. "Other coaches picked them so obviously they were impressed by them and earned their votes."

The last time GCHS had a boys soccer player named to the All-State first team was in 2003.

Despite having a stellar year on the pitch, Yeverino lost out to Liberal's Sammy Duque for Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year honors.

"We thought (Yeverino) would be chosen as player of year in conference this year," Padilla said. "But unfortunately didn't. He had 23 goals in the regular season and 26 goals for the whole year."

Padilla said he sees being recognized with awards could be benifitial for Yeverino and Reyes in regards to playing at the next level.

"Recruiting, that would be another check mark to see if they would want to play somewhere else," Padilla said. "Ricardo can go pretty much any more. I think they have talked to some jucos.

"I think if Edgar can continue (in college) he had improved so much this last year. He made a lot of progress the last four years and can play anywhere -- defense, midfielder, forward, even played goalkeeper for us last year. His height helps him a lot. He's not short and has very good skill."
