WINFIELD — Garden City executed a good game plan Friday night.
On night one of a two-day swing through the Wichita area, the Buffaloes held off Winfield 52-45, spoiling the Vikings' homecoming — but what a price to pay for a solid showing.
Playing for the first time since a loss to Ulysses 10 days ago, coach Jacy Holloway was hoping his team would show four full quarters of intensity, something they haven't been able to do much this season.
But they did, picking up their sixth win of the season and showing Holloway — and themselves — what they can do when they execute well.
"It's nice to know that what we put in during this week off, paid off," he said.
The Buffaloes scored in double figures in all four quarters, including an 11-3 opening period, which proved to be the difference they needed the rest of the game.
Bo Banner had eight of Garden City's 11 points in that quarter, including two 3-pointers.
After that, teammates Jake Curran and Braden Taylor took over much of the scoring chores, hitting for 19 and 11 total points, respectively.
Austin Terpstra added eight and Denton Keller three as only five Buffaloes made the scoring column, but it was an all-around team effort that proved to be Garden City's forte this night.
Garden City checked Winfield's offense in the first period, holding it to just 1-of-12 from the floor. Tucker Hoover and Will Adler combined for 12 Vikings' points in the second quarter, including Adler's bank shot 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the first half, which cut the Buffalo lead to just 21-19.
But it was a zoned-in Buffaloes squad that came out strong in the third period, converting seven possessions for 15 points.
Winfield cut the lead to 32-31 late in the third when Landon Fox hit the third of his four 3-pointers, but Curran hit two shots late in the quarter to give the Buffaloes a five-point cushion at the break.
Winfield cut the lead to two on Seth Bryant's three, but Curran countered with a two.
After Taylor's offensive put-back with over three minutes to play, Fox hit another three to cut the lead to 45-42.
After that, all of Garden City's offense came at the free throw line. On their final six possessions, they hit 7-of-10 free throws and Winfield could not find a way through that.
Holloway liked his team's overall effort, especially in holding off all the Winfield charges. He admitted that it was not as complete a four quarters as he would have liked, but it was pretty close.
"I thought that in the first half we weren't as aggressive. We talked about it at halftime. To their credit, they came out and their energy, focus and aggressiveness was much better," he said.
Garden City committed just 12 turnovers and picked up 38 rebounds, something else Holloway commended.
Fox led Winfield with 14 points, but he was the only Viking in double figures.
Winfield was just 6-of-22 from 3-point land and only converted 9-of-19 from the free throw line.
Garden City was 4-of-12 from beyond the arc and 14-of-22 from the line.
The Buffaloes (6-9) will try to make it an eastern sweep tonight when they take on Derby.
