Lady Buffs get easy win at Newton

It took three days and three games, but the Garden City Lady Buffaloes finally got a victory at the Newton Invitational.

After dropping tough decisions to eventual champion Bishop Miege on Thursday (48-44) and to Bishop Carroll (54-46) on Friday, the Lady Buffs easily dispatched Goddard's Lady Lions 51-27 in the seventh place game on Saturday afternoon.

The victory improves the Lady Buffs' season record to 11-3 and they will now get ready to host Holcomb's Class 3A No. 2-ranked Lady Longhorns at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the New Garden.

After a sluggish first quarter, the Lady Buffs finally got things in gear, outscoring Goddard 18-11 in the second stanza to go in at halftime with a 24-13 lead.

"We did get off to a bit of a slow start and part of that was playing so early (noon)," GCHS coach David Upton said.

From there, Garden City built its lead to as many as 15 in the third quarter, eventually settling for a 37-22 advantage heading to the fourth.

"Once we got our feet under us, I thought we did a good job of taking care of our business and putting the game away," Upton said. "We wanted to get the bad taste out of our mouth from those two losses and regain a little momentum. That's a game that we know what we're supposed to do, and it was nice to see them do that."

They closed out the game with a 14-5 run in the fourth to win going away.

A balanced scoring attack was pivotal for head coach David Upton as Taryn Tempel, Johna McClelland and Jaymie Bernbeck all reached double figures. Tempel led the way with 15, 10 of which came in the second half and nine of those were produced in the fourth period. McClelland and Bernbeck chipped in with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Goddard got 11 points from Emily Rausch.
