The Garden City High School girls basketball team was assigned the No. 2 seed for the 37th Annual Newton Tournament of Champions tournament, scheduled for Jan. 24 through 26.

The Lady Buffs, who improved to 10-1 with a 61-38 victory on Tuesday at Ulysses, will face traditional Class 5A power Bishop Miege (5-2) at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 24 and are in the lower half of the bracket. Also in that side of the bracket is No. 3-seeded and host Newton (8-1) which faces Bishop Carroll (6-3) in the 8:15 p.m. contest.

In other first-round games on Jan. 24, it will be top-seeded and unbeaten Wichita Kapaun-Mt. Carmel (9-0) opening at 3 p.m. against Goddard (1-8) and Andover Central (7-3) facing Olathe Northwest (6-3) in the 4:45 p.m. game.

In its traditional role as one of the state's top mid-season tournaments, this year's TOC is again loaded with ranked teams in both Class 6A and 5A.

The Lady Buffs earned their first state ranking and are now at No. 7 as voted by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association on Monday. Olathe Northwest, the other 6A team in the tournament, is ranked No. 6. The Class 5A teams in the field that are ranked include Kapaun-Mt. Carmel (No. 1), Bishop Miege (No. 6) and Newton (No. 3). Bishop Carroll and Andover Central are not ranked but still have solid records entering the TOC. Goddard is the lone school with a losing record.

Consolation and semifinal games are slated for Jan. 25, with the Lady Buffs facing either Newton or Bishop Carroll, with a consolation game at 4:45 p.m. or a semifinal showdown at 8:15 p.m. The tournament concludes on Jan. 26 with consolation games and the championship game at 4:30 p.m.
