Busters volleyball wins at Cloud Co.

The Garden City Community College volleyball team beat Cloud County in four sets Tuesday at Concordia.
The Lady Broncbusters improved to 15-12 overall and 3-4 in the Jayhawk Conference with the win. GCCC took the match 25-22, 25-20, 21-25, 25-22.
"I thought we went in fairly confident, knowing that we'd already beaten them once," head coach Rob Lutz said in a telephone interview. "We also knew they were coming in off a win the night before against Dodge (City), so we knew they were going to be a tougher opponent than the first time we played them. I thought we prepared well for it, I thought we had the right intensity to start the match."
The Busters previously beat the Lady Thunderbirds (4-16, 1-9 KJCCC) in their home opener at the Perryman Athletic Complex back on Sept. 3, sweeping the match for GCCC's first conference victory in three-plus seasons.
Tuesday's match was more intense, and Lutz said it was sloppy, with lots of errors on both sides of the net.
"Part of it was, the intensity was a lot higher," Lutz said. "And part of it was, we were on the road, and it's a tougher environment when you go on the road."
Garden City suffered a blow when outside hitter Taylor Winchester went out in the first set with a back injury. Shelby Bennett came in off the bench and Lutz said she had a great night attacking. Lutz also praised Natalia Parreira for her hitting at the net and passing.
Lutz said Winchester will be evaluated when the Busters return to Garden City.
The Busters are now one game back of Colby for fourth in the KJCCC standings.
GCCC's next matches are at home, with a doubleheader on Saturday at the Perryman Athletic Complex. Garden City plays rival Dodge City (8-16, 1-6) at 3:30 p.m. and Friends University's junior varsity at 7:30 p.m.
Football at No. 19
The Garden City Community College football team returned to the national rankings this week, checking in at No. 19 in the latest NJCAA poll.
It's the second time this season the Broncbusters (4-1, 2-1 KJCCC) have been ranked, having also been ranked No. 19 after a 2-0 start to the season. They then suffered their lone loss of the season to then-No. 14 Hutchinson.
This week, Garden City again plays in a matchup of ranked teams, as the Busters head to No. 2 Butler for a 7 p.m. game, Saturday in El Dorado.
The Grizzlies (6-0, 4-0) moved up one spot from last week's rankings, and Hutchinson (4-1, 4-0) also moved up one spot to No. 12, to give the Jayhawk Conference three teams in the top 20.
Iowa Western Community College was No. 1 for the the second straight week. Butler, Arizona Western College, Northwest Mississippi Community College and East Mississippi Community College round out the top five.
