The Garden City Community College softball team dropped all three of its games in the first day of the Midland College Spring Softball Classic in Midland, Texas, on Friday.
Poor defense cost the Lady Broncbusters in the losses — 17-13 to Luna (N.M.), 8-2 to Odessa (Texas) and 8-0 to Midland (Texas).
“We didn’t play any defense, whatsoever,” GCCC head coach Becky Holland said in a telephone interview. “Booted the ball around a lot. Just didn’t do our job defensively, at all.”
The Busters had a 4-0 lead in the first inning against Luna, but turned around and gave three right back on errors in the next half-inning. Garden City hit the ball well, getting a pair of home runs from Chelsea Justice, while Lauren Shanks, Emilie Laliberte and Amber Peterson also homered. But GCCC had to go through all three of its pitchers in the game, and defense cost them in the shootout.
“It looked like to me, we went out that first inning against Luna, and we hit the ball really well, and we just expected them to lay down,” Holland said. “We haven’t learned that it’s seven innings, and it’s seven innings for a reason. We need to play hard, and we need to play Garden City ball: hard for seven innings. And that’s just something that will come with time.”
The offense disappeared against a good Odessa team in the 8-2 loss. And Garden City let a 1-0 game in the sixth inning turn into an 8-0 loss to Midland to finish the day.
“In both games, I thought we had opportunities where we should definitely compete, and had a chance to win,” Holland said. “We struck out looking a couple times in the Midland game with the bases loaded, or runners in scoring position. We’re just not taking advantage of the opportunities we’ve been given. We’re not doing our job; we’re not executing when we need to.”
Garden City was scheduled to play Western Texas College at 8:30 a.m. today, and finish against the Lubbock Christian University (Texas) junior varsity at 1:30 p.m. They will open their home season on Thursday with a 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. doubleheader against Pratt at Tangeman Sports Complex.
