GCCC exploring options for on-campus field

Garden City Community College officials confirmed the school is exploring options to construct an on-campus football field and track.
Broncbuster Athletic Director Ryan Ruda said the process is still in the earliest stages.
"Right now, it's just in the exploratory, the RFP (requet for proposal) stage, requesting costs from companies, and timelines for it to be completed," he said in a phone interview.
GCCC president Herbert Swender declined to call the project a stadium, but said the field would be used for football and soccer, and have a track to supplement plans to revive the Broncbuster track and field program.
Ruda said there isn't any set timeline for the proposed project, and as such, there haven't been discussions of how the construction would be funded. Once any bids from companies have been examined, the project and construction would need to be approved by the board of trustees.
The proposed site is located at the old track just east of the GCCC campus on E Spruce Street, between Tangeman Sports Complex and Campus Drive.
Ruda cited concerns about the condition of the turf at Memorial Stadium, where the Buster football and soccer teams currently compete, as a reason the department is looking into construction of an on-campus facility.
GCCC football has been played at Memorial Stadium since its construction in 1962. The Broncbusters have had to dress in their own facility at Dennis Perryman Athletic Complex and then been bused to Memorial Stadium for home games. The turf at Memorial Stadium, installed in 2003, has undergone seam repairs in recent seasons. Memorial Stadium seating capacity is approximately 3,800 and an addition of nearly 1,300 seats was made to the south side of the stadium in 2008, along with a press box for visiting team coaches and media. A Jumbotron scoreboard at the west end of the field was built for the 2009 football season.
GCCC was sharing the field for both football and soccer with Garden City High School until the Buffaloes moved to their new Buffalo Stadium at the beginning of the 2012 school year.
