Lakin found a way to jump out to an early lead and then played well enough to produce a 4-2 victory over Omaha, Neb., Memorial on Friday afternoon in the opening round of the 26th Clanton Memorial Baseball Tournament at Williams Stadium.

The Storm struck early with single runs in the first and second, then adding two more in the third to stake Ryder Yakel to a 4-0 lead early.

Yakel, who finished the game with nine strikeouts, kept Omaha in check, limiting them to just five hits.

The Storm's first run came in the opening inning when Shane Davidson came home on a Bryant Miller hit to right field, followed by Yakel in the second inning when he came home off a wild pitch and beat the tag to lead 2-0 after the second inning.

The third inning proved to be the key offensive inning for Lakin as Miller again scored, this time off a bases-loaded walk to Yakel. After Danny Waldron was replaced by left-handed pitcher Xavi Bradley at the pitchers mound for Omaha Memorial, Daylin Gilleland was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing home Logan Litton.

Omaha Memorial then score its first run in the bottom half of the inning as Nick Bronecki ran home off a throwing error to make the score 4-1 early in the bottom of the third inning.

It was more of a pitchers duel after Omaha Memorial's run, between Lakin's Yakel and Omaha Memorial's Bradley. Yakel struck out two more players in the inning after the run on his way to his final total.

"Four runs was all we needed. Ryder Yakel on the mound did a great job as he only threw 79 pitches," said Lakin head coach Chance Kirby. "He was around the plate all day. He was hitting the corners effectively and catcher Logan Litton also did a great job setting him up."

Left-handed pitcher Bradley returned the favor for Omaha Memorial as he struck out six Lakin batters in the last three innings of the game. Omaha Memorial score another run in the sixth and final inning as a Bradley doubled to left field, scoring R.J. Weiss for Omaha's final tally. However, Yakel recorded strikeouts with the last two batters after Bradley to allow Lakin to survive and get the opening game victory.

Kirby was still impressed with Omaha's Bradley on the pitchers mound.

"Bradley was good. He's one of the best lefties we've seen this year," said Kirby. "He took control of us and took our aggressiveness away."

Going deeper into the season, Kirby was still focusing on having his older players getting back into the routine again.

"We were all right defensively, we need to mesh up a little as we just got some players back from college and just need to get them in the flow," said Kirby.
