Buster men top century mark in Pepsi Classic final

With most all of the student section still in its seat Saturday evening at Perryman Athletic Complex, Kevin Burley gave the Garden City Community College basketball crowd one final reason to cheer before applauding the Broncbusters 106-70 win over Milestone Prep at the end.

With 4:52 left, Burley, standing in the middle of the free throw line took a pass, and with a couple steps toward the basket slammed home the Broncbusters 100th point of game. As he descended to the floor, Burley let out a yell to the Busters' crowd enjoyment of what had been a dominating performance.

Other than trailing early at 12-8 after a Cory Fennix layup for Milestone, the Busters never had much to worry about in the final game of the Pepsi Classic. Garden City (4-2) responded with a 15-0 run that was stopped by a Marquis O'Neal putback for the Kings.

"We can score enough points to win games," GCCC head coach Kris Baumann said. "We have enough talent on the offensive end. We just have to take care of the ball. We have got to be able to stop people and make people shoot jump shots and then go get it."

Frustrated with his team's defensive effort through five games, Baumann subbed often through the first half. By the 16-minute mark, the Busters had already played eight subs. The rotation kept the Busters refreshed. Eight minutes into the first half, a Martel Jackson layup gave Garden City a 30-14 lead.

"We need to work on our defense, get back on transition. We gave up way too many layups, especially -- we gave up 40 points in the first half," the Busters DeRon Anderson said. "We just need to talk. We'll be good."

The Busters took a 55-32 lead in the first half when Anderson tossed up an underhanded alley-oop to Thomas Manzano, who finished with a one-handed slam. Garden City led 58-40 at the break.

"I'm happy we won," Baumann said. "We were better in the second half. We held them to 31 percent in the second half. We held them to 30 points in the second half, so I thought that was some improvement."

The Busters turned the ball over three times in the first minute of the second half, but still there wasn't much Milestone could do to catch up. A Burley dunk, one of the three he had in the game, gave Garden City a 66-46 lead. At the 11:05 mark Anderson slammed home the Busters 80th point, giving Garden City a 30-point lead.

Garden City's lead reached 40 with a Manzano layup.

Four Busters finished in double-figure scoring as Anderson led the way with 20. He was followed by Manzano with 16, Fred Williams, who hit four 3-pointers dropped in 15 and Burley had 13.

"We weren't really worried about scoring, we were worried about playing defense," Anderson said. "We're trying to get ready for (Northeastern Junior College). They're a good team, so we're just trying to get ready for them."

Garden City travels to Sterling, Colo. to face Northeastern on Wednesday. The game tips off at 7 p.m.
