Ulysses 68, Guymon (OKLA) 49

In the battle of the Tigers, Ulysses prevailed winning its opening game of the annual Red and Blue Classic, defeating Guymon, Okla., 68-49, Thursday night in Hugoton.

Ulysses took control of the game early on, scoring 25 points in the opening quarter and holding Guymon to only nine. Four Ulysses Tigers scored in double digits, led by Madison Heney’s 13. Alyssa Castilleja, Riley Oglevie, Gina Ballesteros added 12, Riley Oglevie 11 and Alyssa Castilleja 10.

Hugoton 37, Stratford (TEX) 34

The Hugoton Eagles girls won the first game of their annual Red and Blue Tournament, defeating the Stratford, Texas Elks 37-34 Thursday night in Hugoton.

A 27 point third quarter from the Eagles, had the game in hand before the Elks returned with a big quarter of their own, scoring 22 in the closing quarter. Fortunately for Hugoton, the come back fell short, giving the Eagles the 37-34 win, the first of the season.

In other action Thursday, Southwestern Heights beat Rolla, 53-27.

Playing to fill out the Blue and Red Classic bracket, the Hugoton Eagles girls junior varsity have a tough time against the Perryton, Texas, Rangers Thursday evening, falling 61-11.

The Guymon, Okla., Tigers downed the Ulysses Tigers, 55-47, in the opening round of the Blue and Red Classic Thursday night in Hugoton.

Guymon scored 16 points in the first quarter and out-scored Ulysses in every quarter.

Ulysses did have a bright spot as Josh Hickman’s 17 points led all scorers in the gmae. Devin Walker for Ulysses was tied for the second leading scorer, as well, with 14.

The Southwestern Mustangs got off to a hot start on Thursday, rolling over the Rolla Pirates 60-29 in the Blue and Red Classic.

The Mustangs got 35 of their points from three Mustangs, Juan Garcia, Efren Mercado and Ruben Torres, who scored 13, 12 and 10 points respectively.

The hosting Hugoton Eagles could not keep up with the Perryton, Texas, Rangers Thursday night in opener of the Blue and Red Classic. The Eagles were out-shot 11-3 from behind the 3-point line to lose their first game, 78-60.

It looked good early for Hugoton, outscoring Perryton 20-12 in the first quarter. Unfortunately for the Eagles, Griffin Brosowske for the Rangers took over from there, scoring 38 points, 15 of which came from 3-point land. The leading scorer for Hugoton was Carlos Montiel, racking up 18 points for the Eagles. The only other eagle to hit double digits on Thursday was Michael Mirabal, who scored 11.
