Scott City junior Emily Weather’s 22 points was not enough to overcome the Wichita Trinity Knights Thursday night as the Beavers (1-1) dropped their first game of the season and of the Clarion Inn Roundball Classic, 58-51, in Scott City. With the win, the Knights (2-0) are now 6-0 in the all-time series against the Beavers.
The game started well for the Beavers, as they got off to a quick 8-2 lead behind junior Lyndi Rumford’s six first-quarter points. But two fouls for Rumford in the first quarter forced her to the bench.
Wichita Trinity immediately went on a 9-0 run before a Emily Weathers’ lay up finally snapped it. The Beavers recovered and took the lead at the first quarter buzzer, holding a 14-13 advantgae into the second quarter.
Back-to-back turnovers for the Beavers to start the second quarter allowed the Knights to retake the lead, as the first half saw six lead changes. Rumford’s production was replaced by Weathers, who scored 14 of her 22 points, which led all scorers, in the second quarter.
She also scored 14 of Scott City’s 16 points in that quarter.
The Beavers struggled to get anything going in the third quarter, however, as four of their first five possessions ended with four turnovers and a missed shot, which allowed the Knights to go on a 8-0 run, before Weathers scored with 4:16 left in the period.
The 8-0 run allowed the Knights to take the seventh lead change of the game, a lead they would hold on to for the rest of the game, as the Beavers only scored six points in the third quarter, and did not score a single 3-point shot in the game, and could not do enough in the fourth to overcome their woes from the third quarter, losing 58-51.
The Beavers will look to record their first win of the Roundball classic as they take on the Coronado Cougars tomorrow night in Scott City.
