Four Garden City High School junior cross country runners got valuable experience in Saturday’s Class 6A state championships at Lawrence’s Rim Rock Farm.

And a senior, Taylor Savolt, finished her fall in cross country, before returning to her specialty of track and field in the spring.

The Buffaloes fell a spot short of qualifying a full team on both the girls’ and the boys’ sides of the regional meet a week ago, meaning the five individuals — three girls and two boys — were running for themselves Saturday.

Mario Bustillos had the best finish of any of the five, taking 53rd in 17 minutes, 10.9 seconds on the boys’ side of the 5-kilometer course. Ethan Fisher was not far behind in 57th at 17:18.1.

On the girls’ side, Destiny Avila was 67th in 21:46.4 and Kaetlin Kohlhorst and Savolt were 87th (22:24.2) and 88th (22:26.1), respectively.
