Garden City Community College’s men’s soccer team was nine minutes away from securing a Region VI tournament berth, despite losing Sunday to Dodge City, 3-1.

With the loss Sunday, the Broncbusters were relegated to having to watch Pratt’s matchup with Northwest Kansas Tech Monday. If the Beavers lost to the Mavericks, then the Busters would sneak into the postseason.

And Pratt trailed 1-0 with less than 10 minutes to play in the match, before the Beavers scored on a direct kick to force overtime, and then score in the first two minutes of overtime to win 2-1 and secure the fourth and final spot in the regionals, ending the Busters’ season.

At the whistle to take the direct kick, instead of backing up to take a running start at the kick, Pratt’s Francesco D’Aurelio caught the defense off guard with a toe flick over the line of defenders and into the top left corner of the net for the equalizer.

Then, D’Aurelio sent the entire Pratt team into jubilation with a left-footed strike just minutes into overtime with the game-winner.

The Busters end the season at 7-9-1 overall and 4-9-1 in the KJCCC, good enough for fifth place. The GCCC women finished their season with Sunday’s 3-1 loss to Dodge City, ending the year at 3-13-1 and 3-10-1 in the KJCCC.
