The Garden City Buffaloes struggled with turnovers Friday night, and it cost them a third straight year with the Hatchet.

The Dodge City Red Demons took it back in the annual Hatchet Game Friday night, dominating the turnover battle and a mostly run-based game, with the Red Demons beating Garden City 27-7 Friday night.

Things started out rough for the Buffs (2-5, 2-1), who won the toss but deferred. The Red Demons (4-3, 2-1) used the kickoff to march down the field, taking a 6-0 lead on a run by junior quarterback Beau Foster. The extra point was botched.

After stalling on their first drive, the Buffs forced the Red Demons into a punt, but the Buffs picked the bouncing ball up at the 1 and were tackled almost immediately, starting their second drive of the night from the 3-yard line.

The Buffs got going on the ground, before senior Reece Morss fumbled, and it took a fortunate bounce out of bounds on third down, after he had gotten enough ground for a first down. The drive ended up amounting to nothing, however, as the Buffs were forced to punt.

Both teams exchanged punts before Dodge City kicked to Garden City with 3:53 left in the second quarter.

Garden City started with its drive on the 25, but after a timeout due to some miscommunication, the fumble bug hit the Buffs again, this time with catastrophic results.

Morss again fumbled the ball, but this time it was recovered by Dodge City’s Josh Harshberber. Two plays later, Dodge City’s junior quarterback hurt the Buffs again, scoring on a quarterback keeper to give Dodge City a 13-0 lead with 2:55 after a made extra point.

A penalty pushed Garden City into first-and-20 on its next drive, eventually ending again in a punt. Dodge City got one more touchdown in the half when senior Jaiel Johnson broke free along the right for over 30 yards to score, giving the Red Demons a 20-0 lead into the break.

In the second half, the Buffs took the ball, but just two plays later senior quarterback Tye Davis threw a ball over the center of the field, where it was picked off by Dodge City junior John Johnson.

A couple of drives later, the Red Demons missed a field goal, at which point Morss perhaps made up for earlier errors, breaking free along the right side of the field and taking it all the way down to the Dodge City 34-yard line.

A couple pass plays later, Davis and the big offensive line pushed their way into the end zone. The made extra point cut the Red Demon lead to 20-7.

On the ensuing Dodge City drive, the Buffs held the Red Demons and forced them to punt with about 17 second left in the third quarter. Dodge City punted to the Dodge City 22, and a 3-yard run play by the Red Demons ended the third quarter.

It was just a night the Buffaloes couldn’t get anything going, with the Red Demon defense holding regularly.

With 6:34 left in the fourth, after exchanged punts, Davis was picked off again by Dodge City junior Cedric Rosales with 6:34 left in the fourth, and Dodge City scored a final time, sealing the win.

The Buffaloes finish off their regular season on the road next week when the Buffs travel to Great Bend to face the Panthers.
