In 2016, Dana Finkelstein won the Garden City Charity Classic by four shots, and took the $22,500 paycheck into the top 10 money winners during the Symetra Tour season to earn her first LPGA card.
After posting a pair of 66s in Friday’s first round and Saturday’s second round, Finkelstein is in position to do the exact same thing in 2018.
She will enter Sunday’s final round sitting atop the leaderboard at 12-under, one stroke in front of August Kim (68-65, minus-11) and two strokes in front of Madison Pressel (69-65) and Becca Huffer (68-66).
Finkelstein sits in 22nd on the Symetra money list, but is just $14,000 behind the top 10 that earn an LPGA card. And only one of those golfers in the top 10 money list are in the top 10 at the Charity Classic — Charlotte Thomas, who sits in a tie for fifth at minus-9.
After seven birdies and a bogey in Friday’s early group, Finkelstein was flaw-free Saturday afternoon, posting six birdies. She birdied Nos. 4, 12, 13 and 16 each day, but turned a bogey on the par 5 No. 1 on Friday into a birdie on Saturday.
She began the day, starting on the back nine, with three birdies in her first seven holes.
Kim continued her bogey-free play with seven more birdies and 11 pars Saturday, jumping from ninth into second with her 65 in the second round.
Pressel made one of the biggest jumps of the day with her 65, posting eight birdies and one bogey Saturday. She had five birdies on Nos. 10 through 18 (her first nine holes of the day). A bogey on the par 4 15th was her only flaw.
Also potentially making a move up the money list are Huffer, who sits in 17th on the money list but is tied for third after Saturday, and Vicky Hurst and Pavarisa Yoktuan. Hurst is 14th on the money list and tied for fifth and Yoktuan is 13th on money list and also tied for fifth.
Friday’s leader in the clubhouse, Janie Jackson, struggled to an even-par finish Saturday, and now sits in a tie for 13th with five others at minus-7.
Jackson had three birdies and an eagle Saturday, but negated the gains with five bogeys. Symetra’s money list leader, Dottie Ardina, fell from seventh place after Friday into a tie for 25th with her even-par 72 Saturday.
