The Garden City Buffaloes started the Goddard Invitational off on the right foot by closing out another close game, defeating the Buhler Crusader (0-3), 1-0 Tuesday night in Goddard.
The Buffs have now opened up the season with a pair of back-to-back 1-0 wins.
Head coach Joaquin Padilla still sees areas Garden City needs to improve on this season, however.
“We are still working on coming together," he said. "We see some of the skills there, and we are still learning to be on the same page. The team needs to be more consistent, but we’re working on understanding what we’re doing — and I'm starting to see things come together, and that's all we can ask from the kids. ”
Garden City (2-0) opened up the scoring when Salvador Bustos put one behind the keeper in the 12th minute for his first goal of the season. The Buffaloes seemed to be in control of the game from the get-go as they out-shot the Crusaders, 12 to 2.
“We did have a lot of opportunities, definitely more than they did, but we did not convert on as many as we would have liked, but we’ll get there as we keep working on it," Padilla said.
Garden City will head back to Goddard on Thursday and play in the tournament semifinals, with opponent to be determined. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
