Hutchinson 37, Independence 27
A second-half rally by the No. 5 Independence Pirates fell short late in the fourth quarter as the visiting Hutchinson Blue Dragons held on for the 37-27 upset.
The Dragons (1-0, 2-0) outgained Independence (1-1, 1-1) 383-290, despite being held scoreless in the second half, as the Pirates tried to climb out of a 37-7 hole at the break. Independence managed just 40 rushing yards on 15 attempts, thanks to being sacked six times.
Quarterback Chase Hildreth was also picked off twice by Hutchinson, before Independence tabbed Antoine Wright to finish the game. Wright was 12 of 21 for 145 yards and two touchdowns.
Coffeyville 50, Fort Scott 47
A shootout in Fort Scott ended with the visiting Red Ravens sealing the win with a late defensive stop. Deshawn Massey had 201 yards and a touchdown, and Monta Thomas had 151 yards and four scores, as Coffeyville (1-0, 1-1) racked up 400 yards on the ground.
The loss was the second close defeat for Fort Scott (0-2, 0-2) this season, as the Greyhounds fell to Highland the week prior, 29-28. Full statistics were unavailable at time of press Sunday.
Highland 17, Ellsworth 10
After Ellsworth took a 10-3 early in the second half, the visiting Scotties answered with a pair of Kevin Brown touchdown runs to win 17-10. The latter run came with 1:52 remaining, capping a six-play, 83-yard drive that took nearly five minutes off the clock.
It’s the second-consecutive comeback win for the Scotties, who rallied to beat Fort Scott a week prior, 29-28.
The Scotties (1-0, 2-0) were just 2 of 13 on third down, but had 184 rushing yards on 34 attempts, led by Brown’s 94 on nine carries. Ellsworth (0-2) out-gained Highland 364-346, and ran 90 offensive plays to Highland’s 54, but the Panthers also turned it over three times.
