A six-run, ninth-inning, game-tying rally by the Garden City Wind turned out to be four naught as the host Santa Fe (N.M.) Fuego got the walk-off 20-19 win in a barnburner.
The two teams combined for 37 hits and used 12 pitchers, as the Wind dropped to 5-18 and the Fuego improved to 9-14. The loss comes on the heels of the Wind taking three of four games against the Fuego in Garden City, before opening the weekend series in Santa Fe with the loss.
Offensive numbers, as the score suggests, were aplenty, but Ryan Whitt led the way for the Wind, going 5 of 6 with four RBIs. He clubbed a pair of doubles and a pair of home runs, while it was Nick King’s blast in the sixth the capped the six-run rally and tied the game.
But it turned out to not be enough, as the Fuego scored a single tally to win it, after putting up a pair of eight-run innings earlier in the game.
The two teams meet again Saturday for Game 2 of the three-game weekend series.
