Wednesday night’s Pecos League game at Clint Lightner Stadium had all the signs of the Garden City Wind putting together its first three-game winning streak.
After holding a 6-1 lead through five innings, the Wind saw Santa Fe, N.M. come back with a pair of three-run innings, each in the sixth and eighth frames, to capture a 7-6 win.
Playing with its first two-game winning streak of the season, the Wind struck early, getting two runs in its first at-bat.
Cole Fenner and Ryan Whitt delivered back-to-back doubles for the first run, and then Ryan Faircloth’s fielder’s choice scored Whitt.
In the third, Whitt drove in Nick King on another infield groundout for a 3-0 lead.
The Fuego got on the board with a single run in the top of the fifth only to have the Wind respond with a three-run spree in the bottom half of the frame, with Daniel Williams delivering a three-run home run.
Santa Fe then made a run at the Wind, scoring three runs in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 6-4.
For much of the season, the Wind has struggled with leads late in games, and this game was no different. The Fuego went up 7-6 with three more runs in the top of the eighth.
