The number seven didn’t prove to be lucky for the Garden City Wind Wednesday night, as they remained winless in seven games to begin the 2018 season with a 9-8 walk-off loss to the Alpine Cowboys.

The Wind was leading 8-6 entering the bottom of the ninth, but couldn’t hold the lead as the Cowboys struck for three runs in their last at-bat, with the winning run scoring on an error by the Wind.

The Wind struck first with a three-run outburst in the third, beginning with a 1-out single by William Bass. Mason Mayberry and Cole Fenner also singled, with Bass scoring on Fenner’s hit.

Ian Horne delivered the fourth consecutive single, scoring Mayberry and then Fenner scored on a ground out by Ryan Whitt.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Alpine responded with a 5-run explosion in the bottom half of the inning.

The back-and-forth battle continued as the Wind scored once in the fourth, added two more in the fifth to retake the lead at 6-5 before the Cowboys (6-2) knotted it with a single run in the sixth.

In the top of the seventh, the Wind pushed home the go-ahead runs when Ryan Whitt belted a two-run home run after Cole Fennder had opened the inning with a single. That made it 8-6.

The Wind continues its road trip with a 7 p.m. Thursday first pitch at Santa Fe, N.M.
