HOISINGTON—Competing in the Class 4A Division II Regionals in Hoisington, the Smoky Valley baseball team made a valiant comeback only to fall short in losing 13-11 to Russell High School on Tuesday.

While the Vikings scored three runs in the first two innings, Russell put six runs in their two at-bats to hold an early 6-3 lead. After adding three more runs in the third and fourth innings, Russell ballooned their advantage to 9-3 heading into the back half of the contest.

The Vikings struck for four runs in the top of the fifth inning to pull back within two before Russell answered with three more runs in the bottom of the inning to push their lead back up to five. Smoky Valley once again pushed across four runs in the top of the sixth to narrow the margin to a single run before Russell added one more run in the bottom half of the inning then by shutting down the Viking bats in the top of the seventh, claimed their 13-11 victory.

While Brett Heitschmidt led the Vikings offense by going four-for-four with a double on the day, it was Brandon Malm who supplied much of the power by going two-for-four with those hits being a double and a three-run home run as well as knocking in a total of five runs.

Bruster Bengston took the loss on the mound for the Vikings.

With the loss, Smoky Valley ends their 2018 season with a 6-15 record.
