Area softball and baseball teams had mixed results on Monday as postseason playoffs got under way at various sites across western Kansas.
The Holcomb Longhorns softball team, the top-seeded team at the Hugoton Class 4A-II regional, was upended by Pratt, 11-5, to see its season come to an end with a final record of 15-4.
The Longhorns' defense committed five errors that led to seven unearned runs by the Greenbacks, who scored one run in the second and fourth innings, while pushing across three runs in each of the third, fifth and seventh frames.
Holcomb, which managed just six hits, scored five runs in the fifth that cut into Pratt's 8-0 lead. Of the five runs by the Longhorns, all were unearned as the Greenbacks also were guilty of five fielding miscues.
Of the six hits, Alex Brungardt was the lone Longhorn with multiple hits, getting two safeties.
Despite giving up just four earned runs, Sydney Faulcenor yielded nine hits, while striking out five and walking two.
In the other half of the bracket, host Hugoton was blanked by Kingman/Norwich, 15-0, in a run-rule shortened game.
At Andale, the Ulysses Tigers had their season ended with a 12-0 loss to Rose Hill while top-seeded Andale/Norwich blanked Mulvane, 12-0, in semifinal action.
The two winners were scheduled to face off in the finals later Monday evening.
At Goodland, Thomas More Prep-Marian advanced with a 7-0 quarterfinal win over Lakin.
In late games, it was Colby defeating Goodland, 12-8, and Sublette/Satanta knocking off Cimarron, 14-9.
Scott City earned the top seed in the tournament and will play the Colby at 3 p.m. Tuesday. TMP-Marian will play Sublette/Satanta at 4:30 p.m. and the championship game will be contested at 6 p.m.
At Johnson City, Medicine Lodge eliminated the host Trojans of Stanton County, 10-0, in a quarterfinal game.
Medicine Lodge then knocked off top-seeded Spearville, 12-0, and Elkhart edged Ellinwood, 7-5.
The title game between Medicine Lodge and Elkhart is set for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
At Elkhart, the Syracuse Bulldogs and Sublette Larks each posted quarterfinal wins on Monday in the 2-1A regional tournament.
The Bulldogs (11-10) squeaked out a 9-8 victory over Wichita County and will now face Moscow (15-3) at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in one semifinal. The Larks, meanwhile, blasted Haskell County rival Satanta, 18-8, in a 5-inning, run-rule decision. The Larks (6-15) will take on top-seeded Elkhart (18-2) in a 2 p.m. semifinal Wednesday. The championship game will be contested at 5 p.m.
Class 4A-II and 4A-I
Class 4A-II and Class 4A-I regionals will begin Tuesday and Wednesday, with 4A-II being played at Garden City Community College's Williams Stadium Tuesday where the Longhorns (13-5) will host Larned (12-8) at 2:30 p.m. In the first semifinal, top-seeded Pratt (16-2) will face Hugoton (8-12) at 1 p.m. The championship game will be played at 4 p.m.
Holcomb is the defending Class 4A-II state champions and will be trying to earn their return trip to the state tourney, this time which will be played in Salina on May 23 and 24.
Ulysses' postseason playoff begins Wednesday at Hays where the Tigers (5-15) take on top-seeded McPherson (14-6) at 2 p.m. while Buhler (13-7) and Hays (11-7) meet at 3:30 p.m. The winners face off in the title game at 5 p.m. The 4A-I state will be played May 23 and 24 at Emporia.
