Despite having just 24 hours of recovery time, a four-hour bus ride and a tough, deep field, the Garden City Buffaloes girls swimming team more than held its own Friday at the Wichita Heights Invitational.
With seven top-10 finishes between individuals and relays, the Buffs scored 139 points to finish seventh among 18 competing schools.
Highlighting the effort was senior Grace Schmidt’s third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:08.62 and Emma Tull’s fifth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:07.13.
“We swam really well considering we had little rest,” head coach Jennifer Meng said. “It’s been a long day, but we saw some really good swimmers, and it will be good for us the rest of the season.”
Schmidt also placed sixth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:57.71.
“Grace was awesome especially when you think we just swam late Thursday afternoon,” Meng said.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Schmidt, Tull, Kirsten Neff and Ashleigh Chappel placed fifth with a time of 2:05.13. The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Neff, Chappel, Tull and Schmidt placed seventh with a time of 4:12.65.
The team will next return to the pool on Thursday when it travels to Emporia.
