Each of the Garden City Community College basketball teams garnered three representatives on the All-KJCCC teams announced Thursday.
The Broncbuster men were led by freshman Jamir Thomas’s first-team selection, while sophomores Pierre Johnson and Kendale Hampton were each named honorable mentions.
All three Buster women — sophomores Jada Washington and Shakendra Tilley and freshman Abi Green — were named to the All-KJCCC second team.
“Obviously, they proved to be three of the top 25 players in the conference,” GCCC men’s head coach Brady Trenkle said of his players. “It was hard to pick this year … There was a lot of good players left off the list.”
Thomas averaged 13.1 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, racking up eight double-doubles for the year as the Busters finished 21-12 and region semifinalists. He also chipped in 70 blocks, second only in the conference to teammate Jeff Otchere.
Pierre Johnson scored 12.1 points per game, and led the KJCCC in assists per game with 4.6.
He also tied for the KJCCC lead in assist-to-turnover ratio with two teammates — Hampton, who led the Busters with 14.1 points per game and 41.7 percent from 3-point range, and Russhard Cruickshank, who Trenkle pointed to as a snub from the list.
On the women’s side, Washington led the Busters — who finished 20-12 and region quarterfinalists — with 10.8 points per game and 3.3 assists per game. Green was right behind at 9.9 points per game and 2.0 steals per game, while Tilley had 9.2 points and a team-leading 6.5 rebounds per game.
“They’re the three that put in the most minutes, and it paid off for them,” GCCC women’s coach Charinee Mitchell said of her players. “They worked hard for it, and it’s well-deserved.”
Note: Conference Players of the Year, Coaches of the year, Freshmen of the year and Defensive Player of the Year will be announced at a later date.
