It wasn't until Saturday morning that the Garden City High School boys and girls basketball teams found out where they would open Class 6A sub-state action this week.
With the state divided into two, 16-team sections, the teams are seeded 1 through 16 and then divided into four, four-team sub-states based upon seeding.
The Buffaloes' boys team (12-8) earned the No. 5 overall seed and will host Haysville-Campus (8-12) at 6 p.m. Wednesday at The Garden.
A victory for the Buffs would put them against the winner of Derby (No. 4, 13-6) and Junction City (No. 13, 7-13) on Saturday. That game will be played on the home court of the higher seeded team.
The Buffs' girls, meanwhile, will be on the road Tuesday for their semifinal game at Hutchinson with tipoff set for 6 p.m. at the Salthawk Activity Center.
The GCHS girls finished the regular season 6-14 and drew the No. 11 seed while Hutchinson brings an 11-8 record and No. 6 seed into the matchup.
The winner of that game will face the winner of Manhattan (No. 3, 18-2) and Wichita West (No. 14, 3-17) on Friday. Again, that championship game will be played at the team with the higher seed.
Winners of both boys and girls sub-state titles will advance to the Class 6A state tournament on March 7 to 10 at Koch Arena in Wichita.
The Buffs' boys qualified a year ago, but lost to top-seeded Blue Valley Northwest in the opening round of the state. Northwest went on to capture the state championship.
The last trip for the girls to state was 2009, when they lost in the opening round.
