In just its second meet of its inaugural season, the Garden City boys swimming team placed fourth among seven squads on Tuesday at the Great Bend Invitational.
The Buffs scored 253 points to finish between Hutchinson's 311 and Hays High's 166. Host Great Bend prevailed with 412 points, while Dodge City was runner-up with 328 points. Liberal (119) and Hutchinson Central Christian (13) rounded out the remaining teams.
Among the highlights for the Buffs were Aaron Schafer (1:15.96) and Dominic Combs (1:20.60) placing second and fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke, respectively.
"We cut time in almost every single event we swam today," head coach Brian Watkins said. "All the WAC teams competed in this meet, and we finished third among those schools."
Watkins said that he continues to see improvement, while also finding places in different events where his team can get better.
"We saw some holes in our lineup that we can put kids in," Watkins said. "We are losing in the second half of our races, so I think we can tighten that up with the right amount of training and hard work."
The Buffs also had fifth-place finishes from its 200-yard medley relay team, Schafer in the 200-yard freestyle, William Keller in the 100-yard freestyle and Brody Hoff in the 500-yard freestyle. The 200-yard freestyle relay unit of Schafer, Avey Arana, Jasper Partin and Keller took fourth (1:54.52).
"It's only been five days since our last meet and the time cuts were significant," Watkins said. "I think the kids are willing to work, and we are going to push them hard from here until winter break to see what we can get out of them."
The Buffs will return to the pool on Tuesday when they travel to the Hutchinson Invitational.
