BOYS

Deerfield Spartans

League: Santa Fe Trail

Classification: 1A-1

Coach: Bill Baird, 1st season

2016-17 record: 10-11 (4-0 in league)

Returning starters: Daven Reyes, Jr., 6-1, G/F, 9 PPG, 7 RPG, 1 APG.

Outlook: First year head coach Bill Baird will look for young players to step up and take leadership roles, as the Deerfield Spartans will be incredibly young this upcoming season. They lost four starters from last season and are only returning two upperclassmen.

One of those upperclassmen and sole returning starter, however, is junior Daven Reyes who was named to the Santa Fe Trail All-League first team last season.

Moscow Wildcats

League: Santa Fe Trail

Classification: 1A-Div II

Coach: Brett Harp, 16th season

2016-17 record: 14-7

Returning starters: Jalen Shaddix, Sr., 6-0, F/C, 7 PPG; Jaylen Mendez, Sr., 5-10; G/F, 12 PPG; Javi Marquez, Sr., 5-7, G, 8 PPG; Kage Allen, Sr., 5-10, G/F, 10 PPG.

Top Newcomers: Justyn Allen, Jr.; Axel Granillo, Jr.; Justyn Allen, Jr.; Trenton Davidson, Jr.; Gaby Granillo, Sr.

Outlook: The Moscow Wildcats look to build upon their sub-state championship appearance last season and will try to reach the state tournament with four returning starters. Moscow will have returners in seniors Jalen Shaddix, Jaylen Mendez, Javi Marquez and Kage Allen, who averaged for a combined 37 points per game and were also named to the Santa Fe Trail All-League first team last season.

“We are looking forward to this year, said Harp. “We lost only one starter from last year and our juniors got a lot of playing time last year. We aren't overly tall, but our athleticism is above average. We are very quick and have high basketball IQ’s.”

GIRLS

Dighton Hornets

League: Northwest Kansas League

Classification: 1A- Div I

Coach: Amy Felker, 16th season (222-126 record at Dighton)

2016-17 record: 21-3

Returning starters: Emily Shepard, Jr., 5-6, G, 2.4 PPG, 2.8 RPG, 1 APG; Gentry Shapland, Jr., 5-6, G, 1.3 PPG, 2.3 RPG, 2.5 APG; Kenadee O’Brien, Jr., 5-7, G, 1.7 PPG, 3.8 APG.

Returning Key Player: Ella Roberts, So., 5-11, F, 10.4 PPG, 5. RPG, 1.4 APG.

Outlook: The Dighton Hornets have some unfinished business as they look to return to the state tournament after losing in the first round last season. The Hornets will have some experience returning this season, as three starters from last season — juniors Emily Shepard, Kenadee O’Brien, and Gentry Shapland — all started last season.

Despite those three returners, most of the team’s scoring from last season graduated. It was the Big 2 of point guard Sara Cramer and post Jordan Speer, both 1,000-point scorers, who paved the way for the Hornets over the past four seasons.

“We lost 66 percent of our scoring, so someone will have to become a scorer,” said Felker.

The top returning scorer is sophomore Ella Roberts, who averaged 10.4 points per game. Roberts was named to the third team All-NWK League team.

Felker is looking for a young Hornets team to improve on a game-to-game basis and through their hard work, “our goal is to improve every day in games and practices. The girls are hard workers and have a lot of heart. They know the system well, and will play hard defense and hustle.”

Greeley County Jackrabbits

League: Northwest Kansas League

Classification: 1A-Div I

Coach: Justin Sherer, 1st season

2016-17 record: 5-16

Returning starters: Hannah Brandl, Sr., 5-10, C/F; Caela Ibarra, Sr., 5-7, C/F; Mattie Brandl, So., 5-3, G.

Outlook: We showed flashes of being a good team last year but we lacked consistency. So we need to focus on being a more consistent team from game to game this year.
