Garden City High School volleyball coach Trista Bailey has been named the Western Athletic Conference’s coach of the year for 2017.
The announcement came Tuesday from the league officials.
Bailey, in her first year guiding the program, led the Buffs to the Class 6A state tournament and a 27-11 record while also overseeing her team’s seventh consecutive WAC championship.
Bailey’s award also comes with two of her players — both sophomores — earning first team all-WAC honors.
The two are 6-0 frontliner Reagan Karlin and 5-5 setter Remi Vargas. Hays sophomore Tasiah Nunnery was voted the WAC Player of the Year by league coaches.
Two more Buffs received second-team recognition — seniors Adisyn Swan and Lindsey Richmeier.
Three Garden City boys soccer team members were named to the first team all-WAC squad, also announced Tuesday.
They include seniors Rene Lares and Genaro Macias and junior Salvador Bustos. The Buffs finished second in the WAC this season with a 5-3 record.
Named to the second team from the Buffs were senior Emmanuel Carillo and sophomores Jesus Garcia and Alonso Vera.
The Buffs reached the Class 6A regional final before dropping a heartbreaking 3-0 penalty kick decision to Topeka-Washburn Rural after 80 minutes of regulation and another 30 minutes of four overtimes. Their season record was 11-7-0.
The all-WAC football team won’t be released until Garden City’s team has completed its season. The Buffs are in the Class 6A quarterfinal round and play Friday at Wichita Northwest.
